Mindfulness is a topic discussed in many different circles today and there’s no doubt that we as a collective need to be more present. But how exactly to do that, when we’re being pulled in a million directions is still somewhat of a mystery for many.
Tablescaping has been growing in popularity these past couple of years and there’s something to be said about the therapeutic and mind-clearing benefits of setting the table.
Some people achieve mindfulness through yoga, exercising, practicing meditation or different breathing techniques. For me and many others, it’s by creating and setting a beautiful table.
Personally, I cannot run on a treadmill or sit in silence. My mind is constantly racing with a hundred different thoughts and I come out feeling more overwhelmed than relaxed.
What does work is focusing my attention and working with my hands on a task that brings me in flow.
The act of creating a table setting is one of the most relaxing activities you can engage in. As you start putting all the pieces together, all other distractions seem to fade into the background, giving you time to breathe and focus on the task at hand.
When I started really embracing tablescaping as a regular hobby, I noticed right away how much of a meditative activity it truly is.
Any activity that helps to quiet the mind can be considered a meditative activity. Tablescaping is a perfect example.
As you contemplate your table setting, your mind and body are in natural synergy, wrapped around your creative ambitions and goals. When you’re focused on creating your centrepiece, and table details those benefits will be on full display: A meditation in motion!
To be mindful means to be able to experience the present moment for exactly what it is. Mindfulness-based practices have been used to improve our mood and decrease symptoms of stress.
Table setting as a practice requires concentration and focus and works best when you clear your mind from other distracting thoughts, being fully immersed in the here and now. It forces your mind to slow down and be more mindful.
On top of that, setting the table is a multi-sensory activity that allows you to experience every step of the creative process.
Sight, touch, and smell are at play as you choose your textures, put together your color palette and create your centrepiece.
From background music to the food being served each choice can alter the overall experience of those that will ultimately enjoy your creation.
As you tackle each individual element that makes up your tablescape, there is a chance for you to be more mindful, not just of the end experience but also of your own inner world; your own thoughts, emotions, and sensations.
You don’t have to wait for a special occasion to set a beautiful table.
Each new day gives you a chance to put together a beautiful table setting, experience the therapeutic benefits of this journey and just enjoy the process.
You can start with what you already have in your home, you do not need any fancy supplies, expensive flowers or to acquire any new skills.
I have used curtains as table runners, leaves or branches as decorations and regularly bring in decor items from around the home into my centrepiece.
The beauty of this practice is that it encourages you to be creative and see ordinary items in a new light.
