Centerpieces serve as the focal point for most tablescapes, so creating something that can delight your guests is both vital and rewarding.
There are endless ways that you can design a lovely centerpiece for your tablescape, but the most successful ones have a few things in common: they’re visually appealing, they complement the meal, and are unique to your celebration.
I love to DIY all of my centerpieces – it is a fun activity that lets me explore my creativity and also incorporates my love for flowers. You can make a centerpiece for your tablescape with just about anything, but in this post, I’ll focus on my floral centerpieces that also feature a little added pizzazz.
This guide will teach you how to make your own gorgeous centerpiece for any occasion, whether you want to create something for a graduation party or an intimate dinner with friends.
Before you can start your project, you need to go shopping for some fresh flowers and other supplies.
For almost all your arrangements you will need
– Fresh flowers. As a rule of thumb, I usually select at least 3 focal flowers
– Greenery & textured filler – such as branches, unusual leaves etc.
– Flower foam
– Container(s)/vases
– Wire cutters
– Accessories
Select your flowers based on your theme, colors, and availability. Don’t fret if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, any flowers can be made to look beautiful in your finished design.
When shopping look for greenery with berries or small pods as these pieces create balance and texture in any design. You can use dried branches, spiked flowers or tall grasses and leaves to add height and texture.
Large leaves are the perfect element to add color, depth and shape to any arrangement.
1. Begin by cutting the floral foam to fit the shape of your container.
2. Use wire cutters to cut down the floral stems into smaller pieces.
3. Fill out the arrangement with greenery and create the skeleton for your desired shape.
4. Once you have the base mostly filled with greenery start adding your flowers.
5. Start with smaller flowers and textured fillers allowing some of the fillers to be taller than other.
6. Rotate the arrangement as you work to ensure your creation looks appealing from all angles.
7. Consider your proportion when adding your larger flowers. For an organic look, I like to play with asymmetry and negative space.
Pro Tip: Keep larger and more weighted stems at the base of the arrangement while using the more whimsical stems for height.
There are many things that can be done to make your centerpiece a more artful expression while emphasizing your florals and reinforcing your theme.
I like to add various decorations to my arrangements in order to draw attention to them and enhance the overall design.
From tiny succulents and pine cones to eggshells, there is no limit to the myriad of items that can be used to embellish your floral centerpiece.
Here are a few of my favorite creations.
As a final thought, don’t discard your centerpieces after dinner is over, give them another purpose. Place it around your house to enjoy for days longer or offer it as a party favor to your guests at the end of the night.
