My first step in any tablescape is to pick a color scheme. I usually choose the main color and one accent color.
Color is the most important aspect of any tablescape. You want to choose colors that complement each other in a way that looks beautiful but doesn’t overwhelm the eyes.
Less is more. You don’t want to have so many things on your tablescape that it looks cluttered. This is a common mistake, and it can make the whole setting look like a big mess!
Instead, stick to the basics. A few carefully chosen dishes, a good-looking centerpiece and decorations make a big impact without creating a crowded tablescape.
A lovely centerpiece on the table will make any table setting look extremely put together. This can be as simple as carefully placing a flower in a vase, or it can be an intentionally created piece of art.
Whatever you create, I invite you to reuse it for a different table or gift it to someone else to enjoy at home.
Here’s a video of how I DIYed a centerpiece flower container.
And here’s another easy DIY centerpiece using vases.
Don’t be afraid to use different colors and bold accessories to accent your tablescape.
Bold colors are more attractive than neutral ones but be tactful with your choices.
For example, during the spring season, I love incorporating lace into my decorations and centerpieces. I usually simply wrap containers with lace ribbons which instantly create a country-style mood.
Have fun with your ribbons and play around with anything else you may have in your home.
One thing that you can do to make this tablescape special is to add little personal touches here and there. This way you can create a special memory with your mom which will be a real treat.
You can customize your tablescape to fit her personality by adding photos, her favorite flowers or any other personal touches.
I love using different types of dishes when I create a tablescape. This makes it more interesting, enhances the color scheme and pulls the whole setting together.
From time to time I use different types of plates, from unique shapes to bright patters, to emphasize the theme of my tablescapes.
Napkins are an important part of a tablescape, so pay them a little extra attention.
Fabric napkins look more elegant, so use them if you have them. However, paper napkins come in all kinds of stylish patterns nowadays so don’t feel like you’re missing out if you don’t have access to cloth ones.
Be creative with your napkins and don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild in terms of how you style them.
Take a look at these different napkin folds I’ve used in the past.
Following the tips above, I started with an aquamarine color scheme with white accents.
I kept my table simple, with the main focal point being the centerpiece.
I created this simple yet elegant centerpiece using floral foam, candles, and fresh flowers. It was very easy to put together but the end result makes it look like I spent hours on it!
An interesting twist to this centerpiece that entertained those present, was how I planned to blow the candles off at the end of the dinner.
When everyone finished their plates, I invited them to place their empty dishes above the candles in front of them and press gently on the floral foam. This action sucked the air out from the candle, effectively blowing it out. It was a fun surprise no one expected!
To dress up the table, I used these floral printed plates I save for special occasions. If you don’t have any floral plates like these, you can always use white plates and adorn your napkin knot with a leftover flower.
Finally, I used these watercolor cloth napkins to go with my floral plate theme. I simply tied the middle into a loose knot, but for your table, you can get creative and add some lace or even a flower.
What do you think?
I loved creating this table for Mother’s day and at the end of the dinner I gifted the centerpiece to a friend that attened. The following day, she sent me a picture with her own tablesetting using that same centerpiece. How wonderful that she got to reuse it!
Tables are where we connect, meet, laugh cry and create memories. Decorations should never be a barrier to these keepsake moments.
Happy Mothers-day and happy tablescaping!
