Have you ever brought home a beautiful oversized vase, filled it with branches, stepped back… and felt something was off?
I’ve been there more times than I can count. A tall vase instantly brings drama and presence to a room, but when the opening is wide, those branches tend to do their own thing. They fall outward, lean awkwardly, and somehow lose the quiet confidence you imagined when you placed the vase on the table or floor.
I’ve always loved oversized vases for the way they anchor a space. They feel grounding, almost architectural. But learning how to make them feel intentional rather than unruly took a bit of gentle experimentation, and one small shift made all the difference.
When I’m working with large branches, I start by breaking off two smaller pieces and placing them horizontally across the opening of the vase. This creates a natural support inside, almost like an unseen framework. From there, I begin layering the main branches in and around that base. The structure underneath holds everything upright, allowing the arrangement to feel fuller, more sculptural, and beautifully composed.
What I love most about this approach is how simple it feels. There’s no need for floral foam or complicated mechanics. It’s about working with the material itself and letting the branches support one another. The result feels thoughtful, calm, and quietly confident, the kind of detail that invites you to pause when you walk past it.
Oversized vases are not meant to feel stiff or overly controlled. They shine when there’s a balance between freedom and intention, when the arrangement feels alive yet grounded.
How do you like to style your large vases at home? Do you lean toward wild and organic, or more structured and sculptural? I’d love to hear what inspires you.
