A tablescape is an excellent way to set the mood for any dinner party, cocktail hour, or small gathering. Tablescapes can be made up of a simple design or they can be detailed and elaborate, depending on your lifestyle and budget.
In this post, you’ll learn about the different elements of a tablescape to help unleash your creativity & get started with your own tablescape.
In traditional table settings, a centerpiece is necessary to tie the whole table together and provide a focal point. This is why many of the tablescapes you’re used to seeing are over the top, extravagant and busy. Typically seen in restaurants and big events, these centerpieces have layers upon layers of flowers and intricate details.
While these tables are no doubt good-looking, I like to create tables that are more homey, toned down and accessible.
So when it comes to your centerpiece, think of something you can create that is simple, elegant and doable even for an intimate family dinner.
The options are endless!
Flowers, plants, sculptures, accessories, candles, even the food itself can all be used to create a stunning centrepiece for your table.
Pay extra attention to your napkins as they contribute a lot to the overall look of the table. Table setting is meant to be accessible, adaptable and affordable, so don’t fret if you don’t have any fabric napkins.
Even a disposable napkin can be dressed up!
Wrap it with satin or any form of fabric as though you are making a money envelope. Cut a ribbon and just simply double tape at the back. If you want to step it up, just use a leftover flower from your centerpiece. There you are, a gorgeous table napkin in minutes.
What dishes you use in your tablescape is usually determined by what dishes you already have in your house. As a general rule I like to pick something inexpensive as the chances of breakage can be high.
Truthfully, you can use anything that is clean and matches your theme. If you’re looking to invest in a new set, I recommend white or ivory plates with a gold or silver rim accent. They provide a clean background to any type of food served on the plate while framing it with their old/silver outline.
When picking glassware, stick to a simple design. I prefer matching glasses that are either clear or have a gold design around the edges. Think of what you will serve in this glassware and choose accordingly.
Consider how the silverware, plates and glassware will all fit next to each other on the table.
Remember to only set the utensils that will be used throughout the service. If you want to take it a step further, keep these guidelines in mind:
Name card holders, personalized games, candle holders, small trays and stand-alone vessels are all fun ways to personalize your tablescape.
Accessories add the final touch to an effective tablescape. Don’t hesitate to incorporate a few of your own small accessories or even buy a few that will fit the theme of the party.
Often with banquets or special occasions I like to add a little something for people to interact. By throwing in a game for guests to participate before dinner it breaks the ice and starts conversations. On top of that it is also a great way for guests to connect to their hosts on a more personal note no matter how large the party is.
There you have it, the 5 elements of a tablescape. Now you are well equipped to get started on your own designs. Practice makes better so dress up your table with as many elements as you like and experiment with different combinations.
Get creative & don’t be afraid to reuse your flowers and setups, tweak it a bit and there you go a totally different table!
