Whether you’re hosting a special dinner party or simply looking to add a touch of elegance to your everyday dining, a beautifully set table can make all the difference. But where do you start if you’re new to tablescaping and not quite sure how to create that perfect look?

I put together five easy and creative DIY tablescape ideas that even beginners can master. 

What  to do with plain vases 

Plain vases can be transformed into unique and eye-catching decor pieces with just a little creativity. 

I love clear glass vases and I keep a variety of sizes and shapes on hand for when I need to create my next tablescape. 

While they may be plain and simple at first glance, there are plenty of ways to transform them into beautiful and one-of-a-kind decor pieces.

Watch the video below to see how I transformed a clear glass vase into a stunning vase that matches my table setting and flowers. 

Here’s how you can do the same:

1. Go around the vase and place double-sided fabric tape as evenly as possible around the vase. Add your fabric, it doesn’t need to be perfect, the result will be stunning. 

2. Once the fabric is wrapped around the vase, use scissors to trim off any excess fabric. 

3. When you’re done, you’ll have a beautiful vase that perfectly complements your table setting.  

4. With this creative and simple DIY tablescaping idea, you’ve now taken your table setting to the next level.

Here’s another centerpiece I created using the same technique:

Colored sand is another easy DIY table decor you can make at home. All you need is sugar and food coloring. 

Here’s how you can make it:

1. Pour the sugar into a large plastic bag or container.

2. Add a few drops of food coloring to the sugar and close the container.

3. Shake vigorously until the color is evenly distributed throughout the sugar. If the color is not as vibrant as you’d like, you can add more food coloring and continue shaking.

4. Let the colored sugar out in a bowl or baking sheet to dry. This may take several hours or overnight, depending on the humidity in your area.

5. Once the colored sugar is dry, you can use it for a variety of decorative purposes, such as filling vases, creating layered centerpieces, or making sand art. Just be sure to handle it carefully, as it can be messy if it gets spilled or kicked around.

Plastic test tubes as centerpieces? We think yes. 

Using plastic test tubes as vases for centerpieces can be a unique and creative way to add a modern touch to your table decor. 

Here are the steps you can follow to create a beautiful and unique centerpiece using plastic test tubes as vases:

1. First, purchase plastic test tubes your preferred size from a craft or party store or online. You can choose to use clear or colored test tubes, depending on the look you are going for.

2. To keep the test tubes upright, create a channel in floral foam for the test tube to sit in. You can get quite creative here with the shape of your centerpiece by shaping the foam however you want. 

3. Next, fill the test tubes with water and add a single stem of a flower to each tube. You can use a variety of different flowers and colors to create a unique and colorful centerpiece.

4. Finally, take the time to cover the floral foam base with more flower bulbs, greenery, moss or other accents. 

Using plastic test tubes as vases for centerpieces is a creative and cost-effective DIY table decor that adds a modern touch. 

With a little creativity, you can create a beautiful and unique centerpiece that is sure to impress your guests.

Let me let you in on an industry secret.

One of the first things you will learn when you attend a flower arrangement workshop is how to create a visually balanced centerpiece. 

The secret? Clear tape.

By using clear tape to create a grid over the mouth of a vase, you can help to keep the flower stems in place and create a more structured and balanced arrangement.

Here are the steps to using clear tape to create a grid for your flower arrangement.

1. Start by selecting a vase that is appropriate for the size and shape of your flower stems. Fill the vase with water and any flower food or preservatives that came with your flowers.

2. Cut a piece of clear tape that is slightly larger than the mouth of the vase. Place the tape horizontally over the mouth of the vase, and then cut another piece of tape and place it vertically over the first piece of tape, creating a grid.

3. Insert the flower stems through the grid, being careful to evenly distribute them throughout the vase. 

4. Continue to add flowers, filling in any gaps or spaces as needed. Make sure to vary the height and size of the flowers to create a visually interesting arrangement.

Table card holders are an essential element of any well-designed tablescape.

You can add a rustic touch to your table using DIY wine cork place card holders. 

Here are the steps to create your own: 

1. Gather your materials. You will need wine corks, a sharp knife, a fine-point marker or paint pen, and card stock paper.

2. I recommend steaming your corks for 3 minutes to make them easier to cut.

3. Cut at an angle across the top of the cork to create a small slit to hold your name card. 

4. Turn your cork around and cut a thin slice off, being careful to make a straight and level cut. This will create a flat surface to make it sit on the table.

5. Insert your name card and you’re done!
